Today's challenges for tomorrow's fleet

The maritime industry is facing an immense transition. The UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target of reducing emissions by 70% by 2050 compared to 2008. At the same time, the digital revolution enables us to implement far-reaching operational improvements in efficiency, cost reduction and environmental performance.

Innovations in sustainability and digitalization are succeeding each other at an ever faster pace, but the average operational lifespan of existing ships remains about 30 years. That is why the flexibility of new (sustainable) technologies during the total lifespan of ships is of crucial importance.

Bakker Sliedrecht helps shipbuilders and owners with both issues through sustainable technologies in the field of alternative energy carriers and fuels, modular design, digital monitoring and maintenance. Together we prepare the current fleet for the future!

The maritime energy transition – Zero emission is on the horizon

For centuries, our focus has been on sailing and operating at sea in the most efficient way possible. We have continuously improved our vessel design with state-of-the-art solutions to maximize safety and optimize operational performance. This entrepreneurial spirit and the drive to constantly push our knowledge of materials to the limit led to achievements unimaginable when the first diesel-electric vessel (the Russian tanker Vandal) was launched in 1903.

Reducing fuel consumption is a key focus. Not only does this reduce total CO2 emissions, but it is also one of the largest cost items in a ship's operating expenses. Currently, most dredging and offshore vessels are equipped with efficient diesel generators. In addition, smart techniques have been developed to convert generated energy into usable energy in the most efficient way. However, with the 2050 target in mind, even more is being asked of tomorrow's fleet.

Bakker Sliedrecht responds to this ever-changing landscape with solutions for energy generation, distribution and storage. These solutions contribute to achieving the sustainability objectives and ensure reliable and efficient business operations.

The fourth Industrial Revolution - Digitalization in the maritime industry

The digital revolution and emerging technologies from 'Industry 4.0' plays an important role in this transition to make the fleet more sustainable while increasing efficiency and profitability. Optimal synergy and cooperation between all those involved within the life cycle of a ship is crucial to actually improve performance. All (information) processes during the design, engineering, operational and service and maintenance phases must be digitized. The cost reduction and efficiency increase is achieved with new solutions, based on the technologies from 'Industry 4.0'. Bakker Sliedrecht invests in these new technological solutions to meet these maritime challenges.
