Common Diesel Generator protection system

Protect the power plant of DP 2 and 3 vessels on a cost-reducing way against blackouts

Ships with DP 2 or 3 must remain in position at all times, even in the event of malfunctions, faults in the fuel system or the generators' voltage regulators. In order to avoid the consequences of faults, the power plant of a DP 2/3 vessel is usually divided into several operating islands. Due to the spread, all diesel generators run inefficiently, which is undesirable from a cost and environmental point of view. CDG-protection protects vessels against blackouts while being allowed to operate with a closed bus. With this protection, vessels are able and allowed to safely operate with less running generators. This reduces fuel consumption, maintenance and emissions.

How it works

Basic Main Switchboards with classic protection systems are not able to identify which diesel generator is the initiator when a powerplant fault occurs. CDG is a comprehensive protection system which continuously measures parameters and compares them with an advanced algorithm of the system.  At the first level of deviation, a standby generator will be started and an alarm will be issued. If the deviations exceeds further, the faulty generator will be tripped, ensuring uninterrupted workings of the power plant.

CDG for dual fuel plants

Bakker Sliedrecht has developed the very first CDG safety system for a DP2 Dual-Fuel vessel with a combined power plant of over 40MW. The combined use of a mix of generators and sophisticated CDG-protection allows even further reductions in fuel consumption, maintenance and emissions. The solution has been approved by DNV-GL and is seen as a step forward in power plant protection.
