Energy generation on board vessels

Vessels used to be powered only by a set of diesel generators, but nowadays there are numerous options for making a power plant more efficient and sustainable. In addition to different types of energy storage such as batteries and flywheels, there are power generators that can sustainably generate sufficient power. Depending on the intended operational profile and required capacity, the engineers of Bakker Sliedrecht can design the electrical installation that fits your operation.

Traditional diesel generators

Diesel generators are still the most common way of generating power on board a ship today. They have a proven track record and have become significantly more efficient. Different types of energy storage, such as battery packs, can further increase efficiency.

LNG (micro) turbines

LNG is one of the most emission-friendly forms of fossil fuel and has been identified by DNV as a transition fuel in the maritime industry. LNG is less dynamic than a traditional diesel generator and is almost always used in combination with battery packs or other active energy generators/storage devices.

Innovation in on board power generation

The developments in power generation on board succeed each other rapidly. Every decade, new types of energy generation and storage are added. The range of choices is thus constantly widening, and the energy efficiency to be achieved is continuously increasing. Because of these efficiency improvements, the system is becoming more complex. Therefore, it is crucial to realize the right mix of components and their integrated composition.
